Caperdonich Distillery, whose name derives from the Gaelic for 'secret well,' stood on the banks of the River Spey in Rothes, Speyside. Founded in 1897 by James Grant as 'Glen Grant #2,' it operated intermittently before its permanent closure in 2002 and eventual demolition in 2010. This 'lost distillery' remained steadfast in traditional production methods while others expanded, crafting a Speyside single malt characterized by delicate fruity notes, honeyed sweetness, and a distinctive waxy texture. Though the physical structure no longer exists, its legacy endures through rare independent bottlings highly prized by collectors. The remaining stocks, primarily matured in ex-bourbon casks, offer a glimpse into a bygone era of whisky making, with each bottle representing an increasingly scarce piece of Scotch whisky history. The legend of Lord Ross and his daughter's lover adds an air of romantic mystery to this already enigmatic distillery's story.
History
During the height of the whisky boom, James Grant, proprietor of Glen Grant, constructed another distillery "across the road" which he envisioned would be named Glen Grant No. 2 Distillery (see "Glen Grant"). The original design was to augment Glen Grant's supply, with the output of both distilleries being treated identically, and even a pipeline connecting the two. However, reportedly from the outset, No. 2's spirit was distinct. It commenced operations in 1898, two years prior to the boom turning to bust, and closed in 1902. The floor maltings and two kilns continued supplying malt to Glen Grant Distillery, while the warehouses were utilized for raw material storage. The distillery remained dormant until its reconstruction in 1965 by The Glenlivet Distillers Ltd, expansion to four stills in 1967, and renaming to "Caperdonich" after its water supply well. In 1977, the distillery became part of Seagram's following their acquisition of The Glenlivet Distillers. In 2001, upon Pernod Ricard's acquisition of Seagram's whisky assets, the distillery transferred to the new owners. The subsequent year, Pernod Ricard's operating company, Chivas Brothers, closed the distillery. In 2012, Forsyths (established in the 1890s, proprietors of exclusive copperworks in Rothes, now supplying stills, collection vessels and associated piping for the majority of new distilleries worldwide) acquired Caperdonich Distillery, demolished the structures, with the site now supporting their fabrication business operations on this street.
