Over the past two years, Angus Dundee Distillers has achieved something remarkable: successfully elevating two previously obscure distilleries into the global spotlight. This strategic initiative has enabled consumers worldwide to access exceptional single malt whiskies at remarkably accessible price points, while simultaneously driving exponential sales growth for the distilleries. However, Angus Dundee's business model extends far beyond brand building. The majority of whisky produced at their distilleries is allocated to blended Scotch production—both for their proprietary blends and for private label contracts supplying major international retailers and global markets. Additionally, the company maintains a robust bulk export business of semi-finished spirits, including blended Scotch, blended malt, and blended grain whiskies. Founded in 1998 by Terry Hillman, who at 86 remains an active board member, the company's daily operations are now managed by his children, Aaron and Tania Hillman. Tomintoul Distillery represents the crown jewel of this portfolio. The facility is equipped with a 12-ton semi-lauter mash tun, six stainless steel fermentation washbacks with a 56-60 hour fermentation period, and two sets of copper pot stills. Operating at maximum capacity, the distillery produces 15 mashes weekly. Its maturation infrastructure comprises 13 on-site warehouses (both racked and traditional dunnage) housing an impressive 120,000 casks. Historically producing unpeated spirit, Tomintoul introduced heavily peated whisky production in 2001, with phenol levels reaching 55ppm. The distillery also features an advanced blending center with 14 large-scale marrying vessels. Tomintoul's core portfolio includes the no-age-statement Tlàth, alongside age-stated expressions of 10, 14, 16, 21, and 25 years. The distillery's cask finish program features a 12-year-old Oloroso Sherry cask finish and a 15-year-old Port cask finish. For peat enthusiasts, Tomintoul offers the unaged Peaty Tang and a 15-year-old peated expression, complemented by the heavily peated Old Ballantruan range available in 10 and 15-year-old variants. Recent limited releases showcase the distillery's heritage stocks, including a 1977 single sherry cask, a 1973 double cask vintage, and the Tomintoul Ultimate 1965—an ultra-premium expression from one of their oldest casks.

Blimey, what a quirky little number 🥃 It’s very pale for a 44yo malt for starters, you get that kind of smokiness straight off, almost like lapsang souchong on the nose. There’s a little white pepper kick too, right? On the palate, there’s quite some oaky going on, mentholated tones even, but you actually feel the fruits resisting the oak – the usual tangerines and bananas get coated first, then more tangerines and guavas, mangos and even apples join the dancing, with a whisper of straw tucked in there. It’s globally in the same ballpark as other well-aged oaky malts I’ve tried, but it’s quite unusual, has that je ne sais quoi that makes it sort of winning? It does a little nosedive into that dry cough syrup vibe before cinnamon shows up in the aftertaste, there’s a mushroomy edge, notes of liquorice allsorts too. Honestly? Very good, would happily pour myself another dram.

Blimey, this dram's a bit of a surprise! For a 44-year-old malt, it's incredibly pale—like someone's left it out in the sun too long. The nose hits you first with these overripe bananas and tangerines, but there's a dry cough syrup note lingering underneath, which is oddly refreshing. On the palate, it's all about that oaky character, quite pronounced but strangely well-balanced. You can almost feel the fruits pushing back against the oak, like they're dancing rather than clashing. There's a hint of cinnamon in the aftertaste, and some guavas and mangos joining the party—very fruity combo. The finish has a sort of smokiness, maybe from lapsang souchong, mixed with mentholated tones. White pepper pops up too, which I wasn't expecting. It's quite unusual, but in a way that's sort of winning in the end. Not sure how to describe it, just a certain je ne sais quoi. 🥃

Blimey, this dram’s a right peculiar mix – starts off with this smoky, almost lapsang souchong vibe, then bam, you get hit by tangerines and bananas dancing about, but proper fruity combo. There’s guavas and mangos fighting their way through, and this white pepper kick that’s quite unusual. The oakiness is there, but the fruits sort of push back, like they’re having a proper tussle on your tongue. Finish leaves you with cinnamon and a sort of liquorice allsorts sweetness, but in a good way. And that dry cough syrup hint? Odd, but it works. Very pale for a 44yo, mind, but globally in the same ballpark as some top-notch stuff. There’s a je ne sais quoi about it, really. Sort of winning, innit? 😄

Quite unusual this one – starts with a proper nosedive, all sharp and a bit like dry cough syrup, but then the fruits come through, you know? Tangerines and bananas, some mangos and apples, all dancing around the palate. There’s quite some oak in there, but it’s not overwhelming, sort of winning in the end. You can feel the fruits resisting the oak, like they’re having a bit of a tussle. Then there’s that lapsang souchong smokiness, and cinnamon in the aftertaste. Some mentholated tones too, and notes of liquorice allsorts – very peculiar. It’s globally in the same ballpark as other aged malts but very pale for a 44yo. White pepper and guavas pop up too, which is quite odd. Kind of smokiness lingers, and the oakiness that really works well in tandem with the fruits. A proper fruity combo with a je ne sais quoi. Very good though, strange but very good. 🥃

Cheers, this one’s a curious pour honestly. 🥃 Looks almost like straw water for a 44-year-old malt, which is quite unusual. Nosing it... first thought is lapsang souchong tea, then there’s a distinct mushroomy earthiness underneath. Some notes of liquorice allsorts pop out too, and maybe a hint of dry cough syrup? Not off-putting, just... interesting. To the palate, it’s got quite some oak, but you really ‘feel’ the fruits resisting the oak on your tongue. I get some mangos and a general fruity combo that’s sort of winning against the wood. There’s a kind of smokiness weaving through it all. It finishes with a lovely cinnamon in the aftertaste that really works well with the lingering fruit. Very good, and definitely a conversation starter.
