Glenlivet stands as one of the most iconic single malt Scotch whisky brands, engaged in a perpetual yet cordial rivalry with Glenfiddich for global market leadership. While Glenfiddich pioneered global single malt promotion in the 1960s, Glenlivet claims historical primacy as one of Scotland's first licensed distilleries (1824). The brand's dominance in the crucial US market remained unchallenged for decades, despite Glenfiddich's occasional global sales victories—most recently in 2018 when Glenfiddich sold 16.8 million bottles versus Glenlivet's 14.5 million. Glenlivet's £35 million expansion completed in summer 2018 transformed it into Scotland's largest malt whisky distillery, boosting capacity to 21 million liters annually. The facility features two Briggs full-lauter mash tuns (13.5 tonnes each), 16 traditional wooden washbacks and 16 stainless steel fermenters, plus 14 copper pot stills distributed across three still rooms (4 in the original 19th-century room, 3 in a 2010 addition, and 7 in the new third still house). The core range includes Founder's Reserve, 12 Year Old, 12 Year Old Excellence, 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve, 18 Year Old, 21 Year Old Archive, and XXV. The Captain's Reserve (sherry cask-finished) launched in May 2018, while a 14-year-old sherry cask expression debuted exclusively for the US in September 2019. The non-chill filtered Nadurra series showcases cask-strength craftsmanship through Nadurra Oloroso Sherry Cask, Nadurra First Fill Selection, and the peated Nadurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish, which derives its smoky character from casks that previously held peated Scotch whisky. These are available both at cask strength and 48% ABV for travel retail. The travel retail-exclusive Triple Cask range (Distiller's Reserve, White Oak Reserve, and Rare Cask) succeeded the Master Distiller's Reserve series. The ultra-premium Winchester Collection, honoring Master Distiller Alan Winchester, began in 2014 with a 50-year-old release, with Vintage 1967 joining as the third edition in September 2018. Glenlivet also maintains an enigmatic limited release program, with the latest being Glenlivet Enigma (Spring 2019), whose specifications remain largely confidential. The Distillery Reserve Collection offers four cask-strength expressions aged 12-18 years, exclusively available at the Chivas Brothers visitor centre.

Had this the other night, started off really well 🥃 First sip is punchy, all deep gold honeyed vibes, lovely honeyed and raisiny notes right off the bat, reminded me of sipping Monbazillac with a cheeky splash of orangey Cointreau, even got that sultana juice sweetness and actual sultana fruit notes peeking through. There’s hints of cider and calvados tang in there too, base is like sweet white wine, even a little like mead mixed with Sauternes, even a cheeky hint of Mars bar caramel at the back, right nice. Only thing is it’s a bit narrow, narrower than I’d hoped with high hopes going in, wasn’t much extra depth past that narrow honeyness core. Tried a drop of water but it wouldn’t quite work, kept it as is – simple, very solid malt whisky, good length on the finish too, no harsh aftertast at all 🤌

🥃 Poured this with a fifty-fifty water mix, had such high hopes before even taking a sip. Nose hit first with that Nosing a Mars bar vibe, all that lovely honeyed, sultana juice sweetness, even caught a hint of mead and Cointreau straight away? Water made it narrower mind, stripped out most of that narrow honeyness, left all those proper raisiny notes, even a little touch of Sweet white wine richness. Got a good length too, very raisiny, loads of sultana flavour lingering, proper solid malt whisky that was.

Hada dram this evening that reminded me of sweet white wine and a splash of Monbazillac – lovely honeyed and raisiny notes, a bit like sultana juice drizzled over a chocolate bar. The palate was punchy, very orangey with a narrow honeyness that lingered, good length, deep gold colour. Felt like a fifty‑fifty mix of calvados and something akin to an orange liqueur, very solid malt whisky vibe. Started well, high hopes, and the finish was there wasn't much but still satisfying. 🍯

Poured a dram tonight – lovely deep gold colour in the glass. On the nose, quite punchy at first! Got this very orangey thing, almost like Cointreau, mixed with honey and sultanas. Really lovely honeyed and raisiny notes coming through. Started well – I had high hopes. That sweet combo reminded me of mead or maybe a Sauternes, with a hint of Calvados in there too. Very orangey and honeyed throughout. Sultana juice vibes for sure 🍯 Added a bit of water and honestly it made it narrower, lost some of that punchy character. Fifty-fifty might have been too much – water wouldn't quite work here I reckon. There wasn't much improvement anyway. Still, a very solid malt whisky overall. Good length on the finish, those lovely honeyed and raisiny notes just linger. Simple but satisfying – sometimes that's all you need on a quiet evening 😊

Started off nice and honeyed, like a Mars bar in a glass. Bit of sultana and mead vibes, simple but solid. Added water though... woof, went a bit flat. Still, decent malt all round. 🍯
