Akkeshi Distillery, owned by Tokyo-based import/export firm Kenten Co., Ltd., represents one of Japan's most ambitious terroir-driven whisky projects. Founded in 2015 by president Keiichi Sugita and operational since 2016, the distillery is located in the remote coastal town of Akkeshi, Hokkaido—a region often dubbed the 'Islay of the East' due to its cool, foggy maritime climate, extensive peat bogs, and pristine water sources. The distillery's genesis stemmed from Japan's whisky crisis in the early 2010s, when age-statement expressions vanished from shelves amid soaring global demand. With mentorship from Ichiro Akuto of the renowned Chichibu Distillery, Sugita envisioned creating a truly local whisky that could express Hokkaido's unique character. Akkeshi leverages locally-sourced peat for malting, pure water from the Homakai River, and rare native Mizunara oak for cask maturation, alongside ex-bourbon and sherry casks. The distillery employs two Forsyths copper pot stills and traditional Scottish-style production methods adapted to the Akkeshi climate. Their flagship 'Sarorunkamuy' single malt series—named after the Ainu word for 'red-crowned crane'—showcases progressive age statements, while the '24 Seasons' series captures the essence of Hokkaido's dramatic seasonal changes. Akkeshi has rapidly established itself as a cult producer of peated, coastal Japanese whisky, winning international acclaim despite limited allocations, and embodies the new wave of authentic, regionally-specific Japanese whisky craftsmanship.
