Talisker: The Maritime Classic of Skye Once proudly bearing the tagline 'Talisker – the only distillery on Skye,' the brand now claims a more nuanced distinction as 'the oldest and continuously operating distillery' on the island, following the 2017 establishment of Torabhaig Distillery. Rather than viewing this as competition, Talisker has joined forces with neighboring producers to create the Hebridean Whisky Trail, a tourism initiative featuring Talisker, Torabhaig, Raasay, and Harris distilleries—though Talisker remains the most venerable of the four. Production & Craftsmanship: Talisker's distillery is equipped with an 8-ton stainless steel mash tun and eight Oregon pine washbacks. The mash bill combines 25% peated malt (20-25ppm phenols) with 75% unpeated malt. The distillery operates two wash stills fitted with unique purifiers that use cold air and feature a U-bend lyne arm connection, maximizing copper contact and reflux. Three spirit stills (two renewed in February 2019) work alongside worm tub condensers. A pioneering seawater cooling system for condenser water was first deployed in summer 2018. Fermentation extends 60-65 hours, yielding a medium-peated spirit collected at 76-65% ABV. By 2019, the distillery ran 20 mashes weekly, producing approximately 3.3 million liters of new make spirit annually. Commercial Performance: In 2018, Talisker surpassed 3 million bottles sold globally, becoming Diageo's second best-selling single malt Scotch brand. Portfolio: Core expressions include the no-age-statement Skye & Storm, age-stated 10, 18, 25, and 30 Year Old single malts, Distiller's Edition, the cask-strength 57° North, and Port Ruighe. Black Storm represents the distillery's most heavily peated offering, available as a duty-free limited edition alongside Neist Point. Special Releases: The Bodega Series, launched summer 2018, explores sherry cask influence: a 40-year-old finished in Amontillado casks (cask age >40 years), followed by a 41-year-old Manzanilla finish (cask age >100 years) released June 2019—Talisker's oldest official bottling. Diageo's Special Releases featured an 8-year-old cask-strength Talisker (59.4% ABV) in autumn 2018, a 15-year-old in autumn 2019, and a distillery exclusive. Spring 2019 saw the Game of Thrones series inclusion with a NAS Talisker representing House Greyjoy.
