Strathmill Distillery, nestled in the heart of Speyside at Keith, Moray, presents a fascinating study in contrasts. Founded in 1891 as a converted corn mill, this Diageo-owned distillery operates with remarkable discretion along the A96 highway, just before the River Isla crossing. While the adjacent Isla Cooperage—established by Ricky Proctor in 1989 and acquired by French cooperage giant Tonnellerie François Frères (TFF) in 2009—might suggest a historic partnership, the two entities share only proximity, not ownership. TFF's subsequent 2008 acquisition of the renowned Speyside Cooperage further cemented their presence in the region. Access to Strathmill proves elusive; the distillery sits in a cul-de-sac, strictly closed to visitors despite its active operations. Its strategic importance lies not in tourism but in production: Strathmill's light, nutty spirit serves as a critical component in J&B blended Scotch, which ranks seventh in Scottish whisky sales with approximately 44 million bottles sold annually. The distillery's technical specifications reveal modern efficiency paired with traditional craftsmanship. A 9.1-ton stainless steel semi-lauter mash tun feeds six stainless steel washbacks, operating five days weekly with an alternating fermentation schedule—65-hour short fermentations and 120-hour long fermentations. This produces roughly 2 million liters of new make spirit annually. Strathmill remains one of the few Scottish distilleries employing purifiers on both wash and spirit stills. These purifiers, positioned between lyne arms and condensers, function as mini-condensers that return heavier vapors for re-distillation while allowing lighter vapors to proceed, creating the distillery's signature elegant character. Notably, both purifiers and condensers are housed outside the still house for enhanced energy efficiency. Official bottlings remain exceptionally rare. The distillery's primary expression appears in Diageo's Flora & Fauna series as the Strathmill 12 Year Old, with a limited 25 Year Old release launched in 2014 under the prestigious Rare Malts collection, underscoring its quiet prestige within the industry.

Quite an easy sipper, really fruity from the off — pears, apples and oranges, like a fresh fruit salad with a few banana sweets chucked in 🍐 I get honeyed vanilla, a wee bit of anko sweetness, then some fresh-cut oak at the back with a coconut-ball sort of thing. Not earth-shattering, but very good and honestly rather lovely.
