I tell you, this one’s got some character. There’s a bit of peat lurking in there, not too heavy, more like traces of soot from a distant bonfire. The nose? Oranges and vanilla hit you first, with a hint of candy sugar and those dried apple slices that taste like they’ve been hammered into submission 😄. It’s creamy vanilla and almond milk on the palate, but not in a bad way – more like a weirdly satisfying plasticine texture. Medium body, I reckon, with a touch of cinnamon and Fanta-like orange syrup dancing about. Goes well with sweet chenin blanc, funnily enough. Not the deepest whisky ever, but there’s malt underneath it all, and yeah, it’s okay. Fine! Maybe a splash of water brings out more cereal notes, like Golden Grahams dunked in corn syrup. The casks were excellent, though – gives it that pommes tapées sweetness. Go figure, it got grainier again once reduced, like engine oil mixed with seawater. All things never to be found in ‘pure’ grain whisky, but somehow it works. Not bad, not great – just… good.
