So I poured myself a dram tonight, and right away it's like walking into a bakery at Christmas. There's this lovely smell of fruitcake and prunes soaked in something... maybe a hint of that rich Saint-Emilion wine? But it's not heavy or overly red-wine-y, which is nice. The taste is really quite comforting. I get this immediate hit of dark chocolate and candied cherries, a bit like those cherry cakes my nan used to make. Then it turns into something toastier, like the smell of toasted oak from a log fire. There's a little zing there too, a bit of blood orange or maybe blackcurrant jam, cut through with a bit of black tea tannins. The finish has this warming, roasted malt character, almost like a good Ovaltine before bed. It leaves a memory of those burnt sugar bits on top of a cinnamon roll. 😊 Really rather moreish.
