It all began with a bet in 1994: Master brewer and distiller Florian Stetter traveled to Scotland on a study trip with colleagues. He was amazed by the striking similarities to his native Upper Bavaria—the mountains, pristine water, and pure air. Even the Scots' stubborn character and their kilts (which seemed as quirky as Bavarian lederhosen) felt familiar. Inspired by these Scottish-Bavarian parallels and visits to Speyside's legendary distilleries, Stetter conceived the idea of creating a single malt whiskey in Upper Bavaria. After winning a bet with his colleagues, he distilled the first Lantenhammer whiskey at his parents' brewery—and so SLYRS began.
