Founded in 2016 in Shiga Prefecture, Nagahama Distillery stands as one of Japan's smallest and most artisanal whisky producers, with an annual capacity of just 40,000 liters and a dedicated team of only five permanent craftsmen. Operating with exceptionally small pot stills—some of the smallest in commercial whisky production globally—each distillation yields merely 200 liters, filling approximately one American oak barrel per run. This ultra-craft approach has inspired their signature philosophy: 'Itton-Ikkyoryu' (一樽一蒸留), or 'One Barrel Per Distillation.' Despite its diminutive scale, Nagahama has rapidly achieved cult status among global whisky enthusiasts for its meticulous attention to detail, experimental cask maturation including wine and sherry wood finishes, and a remarkably fruity, complex spirit profile that exemplifies Japanese precision and craftsmanship in whisky making.

Right, just having a dram of this. First thought is it’s incredibly fruity, absolutely tons of pears and crisp apples. It’s got that vibrant vibe, almost akin to millions of litres of new make straight off the still, but definately more Speyside-y. Rather sweet with plenty of barley, white fruit, and a touch of pineapple, plums, and a bit of kirsch. But then there’s this weirdly nice gravel and concrete note, like wet pavement, mixed with a hint of olives. Finishes with some good soot and is slightly smoky. Feels like it’s been resting elsewhere for a while. Tasty drop! 🥃

Quite fresh and rather sweet, with loads of pears, apples and a little plum thing going on. There’s a wee touch of pineapple and coconut water too, which makes it feel easy enough 😊 I also get barley grains, a bit of gravel and clean concrete, plus that good earthy dirt note. Finishes medium, with unpeated white fruit, slight olives, artichoke, kirsch and a nibble of burnt oak.
