In 2017, Chivas Brothers made a strategic entry into the single malt category with official bottlings from three of its key component distilleries: Glenburgie, Miltonduff, and Glenlossie. This marked a pivotal moment for the Scotch whisky giant, bringing its previously 'hidden' distilleries into the spotlight as standalone single malt brands. While Chivas Regal ranks as the world's second-largest Scotch whisky blend, its component distilleries had remained largely behind the curtain—until now. This stands in contrast to Diageo's approach with Johnnie Walker, where flagship distilleries like Cardhu, Clynelish, and Cragganmore have marketed their own single malts for decades. The release from these three Chivas distilleries represents both a response to growing consumer demand for transparency and a strategic positioning in an increasingly competitive single malt market. Each distillery brings a distinct profile to the Chivas blends: Miltonduff provides the warm, muscular foundation; Glenburgie contributes a fruity, soulful character; and Glenlossie delivers precision and consistency through expert cask management. Glenlossie Distillery, located in Speyside, operates with a 12.2-ton stainless steel full lauter mash tun, six Oregon pine washbacks, and three spirit stills. The facility runs 18 mashes per week with an annual production capacity of 4 million liters of pure alcohol. While much of the process is automated, the distillery maintains traditional production methods to train new generations of whisky makers. Historically, Glenlossie's output has been the backbone of major blends including Buchanan's Black & White, Teacher's, and Chivas Regal itself. The 2017 release of Glenlossie 15 Year Old Single Malt marked the distillery's debut in Chivas Brothers' single malt portfolio, complemented by the distillery-exclusive 10 and 12 Year Old expressions available through the Distillery Reserve Collection at visitor centers.

Honestly, this one’s far too red wine-forward right off the bat, all bright strawberries in red wine and fresh strawberry jam vibes, even a hint of grenadine sweetness 🍓. There’s a little mint tingle too, plus that black pepper kick at the edges. It unravels a bit as it sits, loses the initial heavy wine punch to show a proper pure winesky spine, you can see that pale partridge eye colour in the glass too. Super very modern profile, not unpleasant at all, just plain and simple crowd-pleasing stuff innit? No fancy bits, just solid.

Blimey, this whisky's got a right vinous flavour, like sippin' on a glass of red wine 🍷. It's not unpleasant, but it does unravel a bit as you drink it. I get hints of strawberries, mint, and a bit of bitter orange, like a refreshing summer drink 🍹. It's a very modern profile, but I'm not sure if it's a bit too red wine-forward, like it's flirting with bein' a winesky or somethin' 🤔. Still, it's not bad at all, and I can see why someone might like it, especially if they're into sangria or strawberries in red wine 🍷. The finish is a bit plain and simple, but there's a nice tisane of linden and thyme that comes through, like a soothing cuppa 🍵. All in all, it's an interestin' dram, but I'm not sure if it's entirely my cup of tea 🍵.

Just had a dram of this one. It's got a very modern profile, flirting dangerously with full-blown winesky if I'm honest. Loads of strawberries in red wine, almost like a sangria with grenadine. 🍓 It's vinous, plain and simple. Maybe far too red wine-forward for the purists, but I find it not unpleasant. There's some bitter orange and black pepper kicking about. It loves water though, really helps it unravel a bit. Getting some mint and a tisane of linden and thyme on the finish. Not bad at all.

Had a dram tonight that felt plain and simple at first, then fresh strawberries and a hint of grenadine popped up, with a touch of black pepper and mint. It’s a bit vinous, almost like strawberries in red wine, and there’s a lovely tisane of linden and thyme in the background. Not bad at all, though it does flirt dangerously with full-blown winesky – maybe a bit too red wine‑forward for my taste, but still not unpleasant. Loves a splash of water to open up the partridge eye notes. 🍓

Ooh, that’s a proper little character in the glass, isn’t it? First sip hits like a summer puddle—warm strawberries and that linden-thyme tisane humming away in the background, like someone’s left a posh herbal tea bag steeping in the whisky itself. Then the red wine ghost creeps in, not unpleasant but a bit too “sangria for breakfast” for my taste, all jammy and vinous. A drop of water and it starts to unravel, thank goodness—black pepper crackles on the tongue, bitter orange poking through like a cheeky citrus zing, and suddenly it’s not half bad. The tomatoes? Just a whisper, like someone forgot to rinse the glass after a BLT. Partridge eye? Maybe, if partridges wore velvet waistcoats and sipped Earl Grey. Very modern profile, this one—loves water, they say, and they’re not wrong. Ends up somewhere between a bold red wine whisky and a proper pure winesky, flirting dangerously with both but never quite committing. Not bad at all, just a bit too fond of its own dram. 🍓
