Had a dram the other night that just hit different – proper old-school vibes, like a sherry cask that’d been hiding under a pile of autumn leaves and forgotten tea tins. First nose? Coffee and earth, but then these weird metallic notes crept in, reminded me of sniffing a box of old copper coins. The palate’s all leather and cardboard, but in a way that makes you think of malt extract dripping off a spoon. There’s raisins and dried dates doing a jig with some kirsch and Calvados, but it’s the almost monstrous depth that got me – like someone’d chucked a whole ex-solera butt into a walnut-stained cellar. Heavy, meaty, with this chalky, umami thing going on that’s hard to pin down. Tobacco and that dry coffee-schnapps kick lingered forever, while the finish whispered of pu-erh tea and a lost recipe scribbled in a penny book. Proper huge, like drinking history itself. Not sure if it’s slightly deviant or just brilliantly mad, but I’d neck another without hesitation. 🥃
