Glen Keith Distillery, nestled in the heart of Speyside at Keith, Moray, was established in 1957 by Seagram, then owners of Chivas Brothers, as a strategic response to evolving market demands. This modern distillery was conceived during a pivotal era when lighter, more approachable whiskies were gaining traction in key markets, particularly the United States. Founded by Samuel Bronfman, the visionary owner of Seagram, Glen Keith was designed to produce a lighter spirit that could serve as the foundation for Seagram's expanding portfolio of blended whiskies. While Chivas Regal required the robust character of traditional Speyside malts like Strathisla, Bronfman recognized the growing consumer preference for smoother, more mixable blends, following the success of J&B and Cutty Sark. After his unsuccessful attempt to acquire Cutty Sark from Berry Brothers & Rudd (rejected by chairman Hugh Rudd), Bronfman directed his team to develop an alternative. The distillery became instrumental in the creation of Seagram's flagship blend, 100 Pipers, in the early 1960s. To achieve the desired lighter profile, Glen Keith notably experimented with triple distillation—a rarity for Scotch whisky—during this period. By the 1970s, the distillery's versatility was further demonstrated when it began producing peated malt whisky to supply Islay-style components for Chivas blends, as Chivas Brothers lacked their own Islay distillery. These experimental peated expressions were occasionally released under independent labels such as Craigduff and Glenisla. After a period of silence from 2000-2013, Glen Keith underwent a comprehensive refurbishment. The upgraded facility now features a state-of-the-art 8-ton mash tun and six stainless steel washbacks, complementing the original nine Oregon pine fermenters and six stills. This hybrid setup enables a production capacity of 6 million liters annually, with 40 mashes per week, allowing for remarkable flexibility in spirit character. The distillery's transition from blending workhorse to recognized single malt brand culminated in 2017 with the release of its first widely available official bottling, the Glen Keith Distillery Edition. This milestone was followed by the prestigious Secret Speyside Collection launched in July 2019, featuring Glen Keith expressions aged 21, 25, and 28 years. Additionally, an exclusive 22-year-old cask strength bottling is available at Chivas Brothers' distillery visitor centers, cementing Glen Keith's status as a hidden gem within the Speyside region.

Nah, first whiff was a bit off-putting, really. Got this plasticky, rubbery thing going on, like a dusty lamp petrol note mixed with some soapy paraffin. 😅 But then, wait a sec... there's a little brightness hiding in there. Tangerines? Or maybe more like a zesty Fanta. On the palate, it's having a few troubles, but it wakes up a bit with a nice apple pie note. The finish is medium long, but the memory of that raw, slightly chemical edge kinda lasts. Contrary to what I expected after adding a drop of water, it didn't really open up all that much. Almost silent. Honestly, with litres of ginger tonic, it's... fine? But this baby was one of them, I think. Every bottler's got a few duds, and this felt like a very sexy attempt that missed the mark just a little. 🤔

Right, right… first sip feels a bit raw, almost like pale white wine with a splash of Fanta. There’s tangerines and oranges trying to come through, but also a wee rubbery Plastic thing and that same soapy feel from the nose. Nah, not my easiest dram 😅 With a few drops, ah, now it wakes up a bit. Finish is medium long, still a touch odd, but not totally lost.

Right, poured myself a dram tonight… 🤔 First whiff is, well, slightly chemical. Like… a new pencil case? Then it kinda morphs into this lamp petrol vibe, almost white in the glass too. On the palate, it’s like a big splash of litres of ginger tonic, with a Fanta-like sweetness peeking through. Actually, it’s almost silent at first, like a shy grassy eau-de-vie. But give it a moment… ah, now it wakes up! Notes of plastic and rubber come through, straight from the stills kind of raw spirit. 🫨 A bit of that soapy, paraffin thing some have. Hey, hello?? Is this baby gonna cooperate? Contrarily to what sometimes happens right after reducing, it’s pretty difficult to pin down. But then, past that, I get these very nice notes of apple pie, oranges, and tangerines. Like a pale white wine in its lightness. The finish is medium long, with the same kind of soapiness as in the nose, but sweeter. Last dram from the bottle… nah, every bottler’s got a few duds, but the very sexy ones make up for it. This one’s… interesting. 🥃
