Glen Grant, a Speyside single malt whisky distillery owned by Campari Group, is undergoing a significant strategic transformation. Historically, the brand's success relied heavily on young whiskies under five years old, with Italy as its primary market. However, representing only 1% of Campari's total volume and experiencing a 16% sales decline in 2018, the company is pivoting toward premium aged expressions. The new strategy focuses on developing 12-year and 18-year-old whiskies as flagship products, re-evaluating its no-age-statement (NAS) portfolio, and substantially increasing mature stock holdings. The United States, particularly the travel retail channel, is targeted as the key growth market for this repositioned brand. At the heart of this transformation is Dennis Malcolm, Glen Grant's Master Distiller and spiritual leader. Beginning his career as a cooperage apprentice in 1961, Malcolm's 58-year tenure at the distillery culminated in his appointment to the Master Distiller role, where he now oversees all new product development and maintains the distillery's signature light, elegant house style. Production capabilities include a 12.3-ton semi-lauter mash tun, ten Oregon pine washbacks with a minimum 48-hour fermentation period, and eight distinctive copper pot stills. Glen Grant's stills feature uniquely vertical lyne arms and are all equipped with purifiers, creating additional reflux that produces the distillery's characteristic delicate, fruity new make spirit. In 2013, a £5 million state-of-the-art bottling facility commenced operations with a capacity of 12,000 bottles per hour, serving multiple Campari Group distilleries. A second high-end production line launched in 2015, and during 2019, the distillery operated continuously for 20 weeks, conducting 20 mashes weekly to produce approximately 2 million liters of new make spirit annually. The core product range comprises Major's Reserve (NAS), a 5-year-old exclusive to Italy, 10-year-old, 12-year-old (matured in bourbon and sherry casks), and 18-year-old (bourbon cask matured) expressions. Recent premium launches include a 12-year-old non-chill filtered edition for travel retail (2016) and a 15-year-old, first-fill bourbon cask matured whisky bottled at 50% ABV for the US and duty-free markets (2018). A 10-year-old Port cask finish is available exclusively at the distillery. While Glen Grant rarely releases official high-age-statement bottlings, independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail have introduced prestigious vintage expressions, including six releases distilled between 1950 and 1955.

Honestly this is a proper bitter beast of a dram, and I mean that in the best way possible 😮‍💨 First thing that hits you is this bone dry oloroso vibe, like an extremely old solera cask that's been sitting about for decades. Loads of prunes and Smyrna raisins, with this wonderful sherry character that's not sweet at all, just deep and dry and gorgeous. Then you get the heavy mocha coffee notes coming through, almost coffee but with that artisanal coffee liqueur richness. Genuine chocolate and bitter chocolate sitting right alongside roasted nuts and bitter walnuts. There's this walnut wine quality to it, bordering walnut stain, if that makes sense lol. The bitter herbs and bitter saps give it this amazing grip, almost like pine-y oils and cloves mixed with black tobacco. Reminds me of forest soil after rain. There's a touch of sweet Vishnu in there too, just enough to balance things out. The finish is a glorious aftertaste, very long, full of nuts and resins. Proper old school stuff. The Anti-Maltoporn Brigade would probably have a field day with this but honestly it's just a wonderful bitter beast that rewards patience. One of those drams that makes you sit back and just go wow 🥃

Blimey, that’s a proper old beast—bone dry sherry up front, like licking a walnut stain off a barrel. Then comes the bitter herbs, black tobacco, and a whack of cloves. Almost coffee, but not quite—more like heavy mocha with a side of genuine chocolate. Prunes and Smyrna raisins lurk in the background, and the finish? Wow, long as a Sunday sermon. Chestnut honey sweetness just about saves it from being too brutal. Full of nuts, resins, and that forest soil funk. Proper stuff. 🥃

Blimey, that first sip just hits you with this massive wave of dry, nutty complexity. It’s like diving headfirst into a barrel of very old walnuts and Smyrna raisins, all soaked in this wonderful, dry sherry. 🍂 The bitterness is incredible – not harsh, but deep and satisfying, like the best bitter chocolate and those precious lemons squeezed over roasted nuts. Then this heavy mocha coffee and almost coffee-like note rolls in, backed up by what tastes like a very bitter orange liqueur. It’s a wonderful bitter beast, for sure. The finish just goes on forever. You’re left with the warmth of cloves, a hint of walnut wine, and this lingering taste of chestnut honey trying to sweeten up all that glorious, bitter dryness. Wow.

Just had a dram that was a proper grown-up sipper. First whiff hit me with this deep, almost savoury note—like a box of good black tobacco, but then it turns into this really bitter-sweet thing, hints of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. On the tongue it's bone dry, man. That Oloroso cask influence is everywhere, with walnuts and prunes and a sort of herby, almost pine-like oiliness. The finish is where it gets glorious. Just lingers with this heavy mocha coffee and bitter walnut thing, almost like a fantastic artisanal coffee liqueur but drier and more complex. Keeps evolving. Wow. It's a wonderful bitter beast, full of nuts and resins and these precious lemony sparks that cut through. Feeling this one for ages. 🥃
