Glen Garioch (pronounced 'Glen Geery') stands as one of Scotland's most venerable whisky institutions, nestled in the historic market town of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. Officially founded in 1797—though the Aberdeen Journal documented production as early as December 1785—this distinguished Highland distillery embodies over 235 years of uninterrupted Scottish whisky heritage. The distillery's character underwent a profound transformation in 1994 when traditional floor malting ceased, marking the end of its lightly peated era (8-10 ppm phenol content). Contemporary Glen Garioch expressions showcase a classic unpeated Highland style, though vintage bottlings from the pre-1994 era remain highly coveted by collectors for their subtle, elegant smoke. Technical specifications reflect an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship: a single 4-ton full lauter mash tun feeds eight stainless steel washbacks with an extended 72-hour fermentation, fostering complex ester development. The copper pot still system comprises a wash still and spirit still (the latter replaced in 2016), with a third still held in reserve. This meticulous process yields approximately 45,000 liters of new make spirit annually from seven mashes per week, matured in four traditional dunnage warehouses with earthen floors and thick stone walls. The core portfolio is distinguished by its bold 48% ABV bottling strength, delivering exceptional mouthfeel and intensity. The Founder's Reserve (no age statement) and the 12-Year-Old form the foundation, while limited editions demonstrate remarkable wood management. The 15-Year-Old, matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, is strategically positioned for the travel retail channel. Since 2013, the Virgin Oak series has explored the impact of pristine American white oak maturation. Prestigious vintage releases from 1978, 1990, 1994, 1997, and 1998 offer temporal snapshots of the distillery's evolution, complemented by a special 2007 bottling commemorating the Rare Fayre celebration. The Renaissance Collection, a four-chapter narrative series launched in 2014, chronicled Glen Garioch's rebirth, culminating in a sophisticated 18-Year-Old finale in 2018. Each December, the signature Rare Fayre festival transforms the distillery into a convivial gathering where enthusiasts tour the historic facilities, participate in advanced masterclasses, sample exclusive cask-strength expressions, and procure artisanal crafts—evoking the traditional 'Fair' gatherings that have long defined Scottish community and commerce.

Justpoured a dram and got a wee feeling of mineral dust, like walking on chalky grapefruits and dough. There's a hint of fresh brioche and a touch of aspirin, reminds me of bandages after a rainy hike. 🥃 The palate feels heavier porridge with sour creams, a bit like custard left in the sun. Green apples and a hint of straw mingle with a weird octopus vibe – weird but awesome development. Overall it’s got that same style as the Maltbarn, a trend that's become the norm at most indies. 🍏

This dram’s got a proper weight to it – thick as heavy porridge, coats the mouth like fresh brioche soaked in orange blossom water. There’s a medicinal edge, almost like licking a bandage dipped in aspirin, with this dusty mineral kick that reminds me of licking a chalky grapefruit 🍊. The sour creams and dough-like sweetness cling on, but then it flips to something sharper, like Parma violets and grapefruits wrestling in a pile of straw. Long finish, bone-dry, leaves this weirdly comforting chalky aftertaste. Takes me back to sucking the sleeve of my school jumper – weird but oddly nostalgic. Proper complex, like finding a custard cream in a bag of muesli. Not sure what to make of it, but I’m curious for another sip.

Blimey, that’s a lot of dough and chalk on the nose. Like sniffing fresh brioche next to a bag of plaster dust, with a curious whiff of soap and aspirin. Very much its own style. Mouth’s heavy on that chalky, doughy feeling - almost like licking a mineral wall. With water, it gets more interesting, all chalky grapefruits and still a ton of dough. Some say it’s medicinal; I just get more plaster and a weird, pleasing petroly note. Finish goes on forever. 👍 Strangely, it makes me think of concrete, green apples, and maybe a spiderweb in the corner. Pure, bold, and a bit of an oddball. 😉

Just poured myself a dram, and it's hitting all the right notes. 😊 The chalkiness is upfront, like chalky grapefruits with a hint of dough, making me think of fresh brioche. There's this curious petroly riesling vibe, almost like a bone-dry white wine but richer. I get a wee mineral dust feeling, and it reminds me of sucking the sleeve of your jumper at school – a bit medicinal, with touches of bandages and aspirin, but in a nostalgic way. Green apples and sour creams come through, with a long finish. The custard and muesli notes add depth, and it's absolutely gorgeous. It has that heavy chalkiness, like much concrete, but balanced with orange blossom water and Parma violets. Development is awesome, keeping you engaged like stags and deer in the wild. Quite the experience!

First sip hits with this heavy chalkiness, almost like licking concrete dust mixed with grapefruits. Then comes these delicate Parma violets and a whisper of orange blossom water, weirdly lovely against that mineral backdrop. The mouthfeel’s proper thick, like heavier porridge or a dense dough. Reminds me of sucking the sleeve of your jumper at school, that weird comforting texture. There’s a sour cream tang and green apples cutting through, but it stays bone-dry like those austere white wines. Finish is long, with a ghost of petroly riesling and fresh brioche. A hint of bandages and that asprin-like medicinal note hangs around, but it’s not off-putting, just… intriguing. Muesli and sourdough dough linger right at the end. 🤔
