Glen Elgin has deep roots in three distilleries connected to White Horse Blended Whisky. First is Lagavulin, inherited by the brand's creator Peter Mackie from his father. Second is Craigellachie, built by Mackie in 1891 to supply malt whisky for White Horse. Third is Glen Elgin itself, owned not by the Mackie family but by DCL, which acquired White Horse Distillers in 1927. Since the 1890s, single malt whisky from these three distilleries formed the base of White Horse, one of the world's best-selling whiskies in the first half of the 20th century. Though now ranked 15th in whisky sales, White Horse remains the most popular Scotch whisky in some regions, selling 19 million bottles in 2018. Although Glen Elgin wasn't included in Diageo's 1988 Classic Malts series, it has been sold as a single malt since 1977. Respected by blenders and recognized for its consumer sales potential, it briefly appeared in the Flora & Fauna series. In 2002, Diageo gave four brands increased focus—Glen Elgin, Caol Ila, Clynelish, and Glen Ord—launching the Hidden Malts series. While Hidden Malts sold for several years, Glen Ord has since joined The Singleton family, while the other three now appear in the expanded Classic Malts series. Since 2001, Glen Elgin Distillery has operated with one 8.4-ton Steinecker full-lauter mash tun, nine larch washbacks (two replaced in 2018), and six small stills. The distillery runs 12-16 mashes weekly. The stills are connected to six wooden worm tub condensers. In 2019, the distillery operated five days per week, producing 1.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. The sole official bottling is Glen Elgin 12 Year Old. In 2017, Glen Elgin released an 18-year-old expression for the Special Releases series, matured in bodega European oak sherry casks.

Just had a dram that reminded me of a bowl of porridge with a tiny spoonful of yoghurt, a hint of crystallised angelica and a little cork note. The palate feels very creamy, like white bread soaked in juice, with big citrus and grapefruits at the helm, plus pine needles and lemongrass in the background. There's a characterful malt whisky vibe, barely any wood in the way, and a faint flesh and skin texture. It’s just perfect for a long evening sip. 😊

First sip hits with a big citrus punch—grapefruit and lemongrass dancing upfront, that bright juice thing going on. No wood in the way, just clean, creamy malt, thick as white bread soaked in milk. A tiny hint of smoke lingers, like embers in a hearth, while the flesh and skin of the barley give this proper body. There's a spoonful of yoghurt tang and a whisper of cork, earthy and dry, but it’s all wrapped in this superb all-naturel character. Leaves and porridge notes—what’s that about?—but in a good way, like walking through a field after rain. Just perfect, really. Smooth, no harsh edges, and it sits on the tongue forever. Feels like a proper characterful dram, but with a twist, maybe a bit Watt-ish in its spirit. Crystallised angelica? Not sure, but it’s got that sweet, boozy depth. Bloody lovely.

First sip and it’s like a breeze through a pine forest, that tiny wisp of smoke just lingering. Big citrus hit upfront—grapefruit leading the charge, sharp but oh so fresh. Then it softens, creamy almost, like a spoon of yoghurt melted into very pale white wine. There’s a sweetness too, crystallised angelica maybe, and a touch of corky warmth. No oak getting in the way, just pure, natural flavour. Porridge-like comfort at the end, but bright and zingy. Just perfect, really. 🍋

Blimey, this dram’s a proper delight. First sip hits you with big citrus – sharp grapefruit upfront, like biting into one freshly peeled. Then it mellows into this really creamy texture, smooth as a Sunday morning. There’s a whisper of smoke hiding in the back, nothing overpowering, just enough to remind you it’s got some backbone. The malt’s characterful, bold and full of life, with porridge and white bread notes weaving through – proper comforting stuff. A splash of Barley and IPA gives it a sweet, hoppy kick, while crystallised angelica and lemongrass add a quirky twist. Tiny hint of pine needles, that’s nice, earthy and fresh. Honestly, it’s like they chucked all the good bits into a glass and nailed it. Just perfect, no faffing about. Been sipping it for a long time now, still not bored. Leaves you smiling, that’s for sure. 🥃

Wow, this malt whisky is something else – the citrus is huge, grapefruits at the helm with a punch of lemongrass. It's very creamy, like a tiny spoonful of yoghurt, and there's a nice white bread note that reminds me of porridge, ten-times that porridge character. A hint of smoke and some leaves, maybe pine needles, add depth. The finish lingers for a long time, with a little cork and juice from crystallised angelica. Superb all-natural feel, very pale white wine style, and just perfect for a characterful malt whisky in the style of the Watt. Cheers! 😄
