Fettercairn is one of Whyte & Mackay's four stylistically diverse single malt distilleries, located in the eastern Highlands. Founded in 1824, it produces a distinctive fruity spirit. The distillery features a unique still design with external cooling water applied to the neck, creating a lighter style. Equipped with a 5-ton cast iron mash tun, 11 washbacks with 60-hour fermentation, and two stills, it produces 1.5 million liters annually from 18 mashes per week. The Gladstone family owned Fettercairn from 1830 to 1923; Prime Minister William Gladstone's 1853 and 1860 tax reforms allowed duty to be paid on remaining spirit after maturation, revolutionizing the industry. The range includes 12 and 28-year-old bourbon cask-matured whiskies, plus aged expressions like a 40-year-old Palo Cortado sherry finish and a 50-year-old teak port pipe finish. In 2019, a 12-year-old PX sherry cask travel retail exclusive was released.

Firstsniff gives a mushroomy nose with a whisper of leather and amber, then orange drops and ginger spice burst through. A fleeting sulphur note fades, leaving a long, metallic finish that hints at assorted metals and a touch of cardboard. Quite the fun whisky, really 🥃.

This one’s a proper character – starts off with a punch of orangey arrival and fruity punch, almost like someone’s mixed orange juice with a splash of something wicked. There’s a superb leathery undertone, the kind that lingers like an old armchair, but then bam – pepper and ginger kick in, really heats things up, sort of Tabasco meets a fruit drop explosion. The nose is a bit of a puzzle – angelica and moss doing weird things, while this weird cardboard and metallic vibe sneaks in. It’s very complex, yeah, the kind that makes you go “rather… hilarious?” after a sip. High impact, loads of spices dancing about, some sulphur creeping in but not enough to put you off. The metallic notes stick around, like assorted metals in a tin, but in a good way? Not sure if it’s kosher, but it’s fun whisky, I’ll give it that. Long finish, earthy and nutty, with a hint of that high-voltage chartreuse weirdness. Definitely not your average dram. 🥃

Blimey, this one’s a right handful—not for the faint-hearted, that’s for sure. First sniff? Proper Turkish bazaar vibes, all spices and earthy mushrooms, with a weird metallic tang that’s oddly addictive. Then it hits the tongue—ginger and pepper upfront, proper spicy, like a Tabasco kiss, but there’s orangey sweetness fighting back, almost like fruit drops melting into amber. The leather and tobacco notes hang around, but not in a bad way, more like a old armchair that’s seen things. Super complex, that’s what it is—loads going on, but somehow it works? Though that mossy, nutty finish makes me think of a forest floor after a storm, which is… rather hilarious? 🤨 It’s strong, this one, and a bit metallic on the swallow, like licking a battery. Water’s a must, or you’ll be needing a stiff drink afterward. Probably not very kosher for a Tuesday night, but what’s life without a little risk? Honestly, it’s the kind of dram that sneaks up and shakes you by the shoulders—unusual it is, but in a way that leaves you grinning.

Well, this one's a wild ride, isn't it? First sip hits like walking into a real Turkish bazaar – absolutely massive, spicy, and full of assorted metals. Really need a splash of water to tame it. 😅 Then it unfolds. Superb leathery notes, tobacco, and that orangey arrival everyone talks about – like a peeler full of zest. Very complex, with many spices and a real kick of pepper and Tabasco. Some sulphur comes out but in a fun, intriguing way. The finish is long and earthy, with moss and cardboard. It's genuinely unusual, this dram. Rather… hilarious? And powerful, like some kind of ueberSchweppes mixed with high-voltage chartreuse. A fun whisky for sure, and definitely worth a very high mark.

This dram’s got a proper amber glow, that beautifully metallic kick hits you first – like biting into a handful of assorted coins. The nose is a real Turkish bazaar, all mossy and mushroomy with a whiff of fresh porcinis and some sulphur coming out, maybe from the angelica. Then this orangey arrival, quite fruity, but it’s got a spicy punch with pepper and ginger that’s really high-voltage chartreuse, if you know what I mean. There’s a superb leathery note lingering, almost nutty, but then it’s all over the shop – cardboard and tobacco vibes, a bit of orange juice sweetness clinging on, though it’s probably not very kosher. It’s a long finish, that goes away and quick, leaving you wondering if it’s worth a very high mark or just rather… hilarious? Either way, there’s lots going on, and it’s definitely fun whisky – though maybe keep the water handy.
