Bruichladdich Distillery, established in 1881 on the western shore of Loch Indaal on Islay, stands as one of Scotland's most progressive and terroir-focused whisky producers. Under the stewardship of Rémy Cointreau since 2012, the distillery has built its reputation on challenging industry conventions while championing Islay's agricultural heritage. The distillery's commitment to producing the purest expression of Islay single malt begins with its unique approach to barley sourcing. Islay's agricultural landscape presents a distinctive challenge: while few farmers cultivate barley on the island, thousands of protected barnacle geese winter there, feeding on standing crops and significantly impacting yields. In response, Bruichladdich has collaborated with local growers to develop late-sown, early-harvested barley varieties that mature before the geese's arrival, ensuring both wildlife protection and sustainable grain supply. Production specifications reflect Bruichladdich's craft-focused philosophy. The facility operates with a 7-ton cast iron open-top mashtun, six Oregon pine washbacks with fermentation times extending 60-100 hours for enhanced flavor development, and four uniquely tall, narrow-necked stills that produce an exceptionally pure spirit. In 2019, the distillery conducted 9-10 mashes weekly, yielding approximately one million liters of new make spirit annually. The barley regimen emphasizes Scottish provenance, with 50% sourced from Islay and 5% from organic cultivation. In 2017, the distillery pioneered a unique cask experiment, filling 30 casks constructed from three American oak varieties with a mash bill comprising 55% unmalted black barley and 45% malted barley. Though production temporarily halted in 2018, operations resumed within a year. Bruichladdich's portfolio is structured around three distinct brands, each representing different peat profiles: Bruichladdich (unpeated, 0-3 PPM), Port Charlotte (heavily peated, 40 PPM), and Octomore (super heavily peated, 80-300+ PPM). Core expressions include The Classic Laddie and Port Charlotte 10 Year Old, both released without age statements to prioritize flavor profile over vintage. The distillery's provenance-driven limited editions feature vintage-specific releases such as Islay Barley 2011, Bere Barley 2010, and The Organic 2010, alongside Port Charlotte's Islay Barley 2011 and MRC:01 2010. Exclusive travel retail offerings comprise The Laddie 8, Bruichladdich 1990, Port Charlotte MC:01, and Octomore 09.2. The prestigious Rare Cask series showcases vintage stocks from 1984-1986, while the enigmatic Black Art series continues with Edition 7.1 released in September 2019. The Octomore 10 series, launched in late 2019, demonstrates innovative cask management: 10.1 (5 years, bourbon casks), 10.2 (8 years, bourbon and Sauternes casks), and 10.3 (5 years, Islay-grown barley from Octomore Farm). The 10.4 edition, released in January 2020, features a 3-year maturation in virgin Limousin oak. Feis Ile 2019 special editions included Octomore Event Horizon 12 Year Old and Bruichladdich Valinch 13 Year Old matured in sherry casks. Having ceased in-house malting in 1961, Bruichladdich plans to reinstate this process within three to five years, adopting a Saladin box system—consistent with their current supplier Baird's methodology—to maintain their established flavor profile while achieving vertical integration.

This dram’s a proper looker – full gold with these copper highlights that catch the light just right. On the nose, it’s all Pedro Ximenez casks shouting sweet sherry, but not the usual raisin overload. More like bags and bags of sultanas, with this added layer of figs and a hint of that ultra-fortified Banyuls character. The palate’s got good body, surprisingly light for all that sweetness, and PX is definitely louder here – fruitcaky, but in a way that doesn’t weigh you down. There’s this unexpected grassiness, almost leafy, with a touch of quince jelly and bay leaves that keeps things interesting. A little tobacco sneaks in, but it’s the sort of thing that makes you think it mustn’t be very young, even if it’s the same whisky as the 22. The finish is rather long this time, with this Rivesaltes-meets-La Noche Bocca Arriba complexity. Not what I expected, but in the greatest of news sort of way – a proper good cuvee.

Blimey, this whisky is a treat! 🍸 Got a good maturity to it, like a fine wine. The palate's got a lovely sweetness, like sweet sherry indeed, and there's a hint of ultra-fortified Banyuls or Rivesaltes in there too. It's like sipping on a warm summer day, with discreet whiffs of wisteria blossom in the air. No more raisins, thankfully, just a lovely PX-ed whisky that's got a good body to it. It's not a heavy drink, but it's got a lot of depth, like a nice cup of sugared green tea on a chilly morning. The colour's a beautiful full gold with copper hues, like a sunset over the hills. And the best part? It's got bags and bags and bags of sultanas, like a fruity cake, but not too overpowering. The quince jelly notes are a nice touch, and it's got a lovely leafiness to it, like a walk in the woods. All in all, it's a cracking good whisky, and the greatest of news is that it's not too young, so it's got a nice maturity to it. Cheers to that! 🥳

This PX whisky has a fruity, sugary sweetness from the Pedro Ximenez casks, with a hint of green tea 🍃. It's got a good body and a thin finish, plus some unexpected bay leaf notes 🌿. The cuvee is top-notch, and there's a burst of quince jelly and sultanas on the palate. It's not heavy, just a bit thinner than others, with a full gold color 🥃. The whisky isn't too young, and it's ultra-fortified, tasting like Banyuls or Rivesaltes. No raisins this time, but plenty of bags of sultanas 🍑. Overall, it's a great sipper with a distinct, leafy finish.

Ooh, this one’s a proper treat—thicker in the glass than I expected, all that full gold with copper glints catching the light. First sniff brings these unexpected bay leaf whispers, like a walk through a damp garden at dusk, then suddenly a whisper of wisteria blossom sneaking in. The palate’s got this lovely maturity, not too young at all, with a good body that sits nicely without being heavy. Takes a sip and—bam—those figs and sultanas are there, but just a thin layer, like someone dusted them over the top. Then the sherry kicks in proper, that ultra-fortified Banyuls or Rivesaltes vibe, but not in your face. A little tobacco leaf curls around the edges, and the grassy notes are more pronounced than the others, almost like fresh-cut lawn after rain. PX influence is louder this time, pushing that fruitcake sweetness, but no raisins in sight—thank goodness. Finish lingers rather long, thankfully, with a hint of green tea sweetness and that leafy wine touch lingering like a good book’s last page. Absolute cracker, this one. 🥃

Nice pour, lovely colour — full gold with a bit of copper, looks really inviting. 🥃 On the palate there's that PX sweetness coming through straight away, loads of sultanas and figs, almost like a fruitcake someone's left near the fireplace. Sweet sherry influence is quite clear, maybe from Pedro Ximenez casks — it's quite bold, the PX is louder than I expected. Then there's this little tobacco note sneaking in, and something greener underneath... like sugared green tea with a bit of leafiness. Quite grassy compared to some others I've tried recently. There's a discreet whiff of wisteria blossom too, which is quite nice — reminds me of quince jelly actually. Touch of bay leaves came as a surprise. Good body on it, not thin at all. Definitely has some maturity to it, a proper good cuvée I'd say. Feels like it could be the same whisky as the 22, just a bit more developed maybe. Adds an extra layer with all that dried fruit. Rather long finish this time 😊
