Nestled in the historic town of Forres—immortalized by Shakespeare's Macbeth—Benromach Distillery awaits discovery along Scotland's A96 corridor between Elgin and Inverness. This quintessential Speyside gem, owned by independent bottling legend Gordon & McPhail since 1993, has evolved from a quiet producer into a pilgrimage site for discerning whisky enthusiasts, attracting 13,000 visitors in 2018 alone and earning VisitScotland's prestigious Five-Star Visitor Attraction status. The distillery experience encompasses four curated tour options, including exclusive access to observe Red Door Gin production within the same facility. Benromach's production philosophy centers on recreating authentic 1950s Speyside character, employing moderately peated malted barley (12 ppm phenol content) that undergoes slow fermentation in 13 larch washbacks—nine of which were installed in early 2017—for an exceptionally long 67-115 hour cycle. The 1.5-ton semi-lauter mash tun, distinctive with its copper canopy, feeds a pair of condenser-equipped pot stills that craft approximately 400,000 liters of new make spirit annually across 14 mashes weekly, with dedicated two-week periods reserved for peated whisky production. Maturation occurs in five traditional dunnage warehouses, expanded to seven by late 2019. The core portfolio features the benchmark 10-Year-Old, refined 15-Year-Old, and the Cask Strength Vintage 2008 expression, which superseded the classic 100° Proof. Limited releases showcase exceptional depth: a 1978 single cask, a 2009 triple-distilled experimental malt, and a 20th anniversary commemorative bottling. The Heritage Collection, launched Spring 2019, unveiled rare 1972 and 1977 vintages. Special editions include the certified Organic 2011 and Peat Smoke 2008, with March 2019 introducing Peat Smoke Sherry Cask Matured. Innovative wine cask finishes feature Château Cissac 2010 (red wine barriques) and Sassicaia 2011 (Super Tuscan casks). October 2018 marked the philanthropic release of Cask No. 1, comprising the first bottling under Gordon & McPhail's stewardship, with all proceeds benefiting charitable causes.

Got a dram last night, and it was surprisingly cohesive – everything just clicks together. It starts with a bit of beach‑sand grit on the palate, then a whisper of vanilla and a subtle apple note in the background. There's a faint jelly‑bean sweetness that sits behind the smoke, which is fine but not overwhelming, more ashy than the usual peat. The texture felt a little like textile – smooth yet with a hint of concrete edge, almost like greases on a rusty pipe. I could tell it was a first‑fill bourbon cask influence, 67 ppm of something giving a gentle bite. Not utterly expressive, a bit shy, but there's lots of love in it and it actually feels better than you might think. Nothing dramatic to complain about, just a regular range that leaves you expecting more next time. 🍂

Nose kicks off with these juicy apples and pineapples, like a tropical breeze, but then you get this rather kippery edge, almost like beach sand and rocks mixed in. There's a hint of vanilla and pale white wine sweetness in the background, pretty inviting. On the palate, it's smooth but with a machine oil greasiness that's a bit odd. The smoke comes through as fine and ashy, not too aggressive, and the bourbon influence from the first fill gives it a solid backbone. It's not utterly expressive, but the flavours stick together really well—extremely cohesive, I'd say. The finish is rather long, with some textile-like tannins and a touch of rocks minerality. Maybe a tad little disturbing, but nothing to complain about. Better than what you might think, especially if you're into that northern maritime vibe. A very fine dram, though it's right in the regular range for strength. 🥃

This dram's got a proper smoky character, like a bonfire on the beach with a hint of sweetness lingering behind. The peat hits you first, but it's not overwhelming – more like a gentle nod to Ardbeg’s northern roots. There’s a subtle funk of kipper and a touch of machine oil that’s oddly appealing, though I was expecting more depth. It’s not the most expressive whisky, a bit of a shy boy, but there’s lots of love in it – the bourbon cask influence gives it a smooth vanilla backbone. The texture’s cohesive, almost greasy in a good way, and the 67ppm ABV packs a punch without being brutal. A few jelly bean sweetness notes pop up, and while it’s rather long, it’s not utterly complex – just solid, nothing to complain about. Better than what you might think, really.

Smoke's fine, not too in your face. Bit ashy, like beach sand on the tongue. Vanilla and pineapple peek through, jelly beans maybe? Shy but decent. Rather kippery, first fill bourbon vibes. Long finish, nothing to complain about. Better than what you might think 😌

Ah, that’s a shy one, innit? Starts with a wee whiff of vanilla and pineapple, like jelly beans left in the sun. Bit of beach sand and machine oil lurking—rather kippery, but the smoke’s fine, not overpowering. Sips smooth, cohesive even, though it’s a tad ashy. Sweetness hums in the background, like pale white wine with a hint of apples. Feels a bit long, maybe expecting more depth, but it’s all there, just… quiet. Not bad at all, actually. Rather fine for a regular dram. 🥃
