BenRiach Distillery, founded in 1898 in the heart of Speyside, stands as one of Scotland's most innovative single malt whisky producers. Located near Elgin on the A941, the distillery was acquired by Brown-Forman Corporation in 2016, ushering in a new chapter in its storied history. Under the masterful guidance of Rachel Barrie—one of the industry's most revered figures with 27 years of experience at iconic houses including Glenmorangie, Ardbeg, Bowmore, and Laphroaig—BenRiach has cemented its reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and creative maturation. Barrie's appointment in 2017 made her the first female master distiller to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh, and she was inducted into Whisky Magazine's Hall of Fame in 2018. The distillery operates a versatile traditional setup comprising a 5.8-ton cast iron mash tun, eight stainless steel washbacks with variable fermentation periods (55-100+ hours), and two pairs of copper pot stills. This configuration facilitates BenRiach's distinctive production philosophy, encompassing both unpeated and heavily peated (35ppm) new make spirit, alongside experimental triple distillation—a Speyside rarity. In 2019, the distillery produced 1.8 million liters of new make, including 15,000 liters of triple-distilled whisky. The on-site maltings, refurbished in 2013, function periodically for specialized runs. BenRiach's portfolio demonstrates remarkable breadth across four pillars: the Classic Speyside Collection (Heart of Speyside, age statements from 10 to 30 years), the Peated Collection (Birnie Moss, Curiositas 10YO, Temporis 21YO matured across multiple cask types, and Authenticus 30YO), the pioneering Wood Finish Series (22-year-old expressions finished in Dark Rum, Dunder, and Albariza casks), and Travel Retail exclusives featuring triple-distilled 10YO and quarter cask variants. The distillery's acclaimed Cask Bottlings program offers enthusiasts access to single cask, cask strength releases, with Batch 16 (July 2019) showcasing at least 24 unique casks. While no formal visitor center exists, BenRiach conducts tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, complemented by a shop offering direct purchases.

Had a dram that felt really rich and thick, almost oily on the tongue – long finish that lingered like sawdust after a bonfire. It didn’t taste like a typical Scotch, more like a big maple syrup drizzle with a hint of juniper and melon liqueur, a whisper of crème de menthe keeping it fresh. Very natural honeyed sweetness, sweet‑spicy kick, a touch of ginger liqueur and vanilla, with ginger‑speculoos notes peeking through. Colour deep gold, reminds me of a genever‑bourbon hybrid – wonderfully made, proper sexy whisky 😊

Right so I poured this last night and honestly it's a very interesting dram. Deep gold in the glass, looks the part. On the nose it's got this big coconut and banana thing going on, like proper tropical vibes, loads of vanilla too. Big vanilla. Very thick and oily on the palate, you can tell it's got weight to it. It's sweeeeeet and syrupyyyyyyy, almost like maple syrup drizzled over bananas. There's a honeyed quality underneath and some ginger liqueur warmth, almost speculoos-like. Then you get these weird pencil shavings and sawdust notes, plenty of fresh oak, a bit of genever and juniper lurking about. Kind of light in spirit despite all that richness? Hard to explain. It's extremely liqueury, like melon liqueur and crème de menthe had a party. Not very natural tasting if I'm honest, almost like cologne at points. Definitely bourbon cask influence all over this. Pretty brilliant bourbon character actually. There's a sexy whisky quality to it though, can't deny that. Quite an achievement balancing all those flavours. Long finish, sweet and spicy right to the end. But is it a good Scotch? Nah. Bad Scotch honestly. UnScotch Scotch. It doesn't taste like it belongs in Scotland at all. But I kinda love it anyway 😅

This one’s deep gold in the glass, pretty thick and oily looking. Smells sweet straight away – maple syrup, vanilla, a hint of honeyed melon liqueur maybe? There’s also something that reminds me of fresh pencil shavings and sawdust, like a workshop. And… is that a touch of cologne? A bit floral-perfumed. To taste, oh wow, it’s sweeeeeet and syrupyyyyyyy. Definitely has that bourbon character, with plenty of fresh oak and ginger spice. Kind of like ginger liqueur or speculoos biscuits. So thick and liqueury on the tongue, almost like crème de menthe but without the mint. Not very natural-tasting, but very interesting. The finish is long, leaving that sweet, spicy, slightly woody aftertaste. It’s not your typical Scotch at all – an unScotch Scotch, for sure. Some might call it a bad Scotch if they’re expecting tradition, but I think it’s a wonderfully made, sexy whisky. Just a small glass though, it’s a lot!

Colour's a deep gold, looks rich in the glass. First nosing, it's big vanilla and maple syrup right off the bat, quite honeyed. Then a sort of juniper freshness comes through, mixed with that classic sweet and spicy kick. 🍯 Tasting it, it's very thick and oily, coats the mouth. There's a lot of fresh oak and a pronounced ginger/spice note, almost like ginger liqueur. Sweetness is there, but not overly so – maybe some melon or coconut lurking underneath. The finish is really long, and that crème de menthe hint lingers in an interesting way. Honestly, it's a very interesting dram. Kind of light on the typical Scotch markers, more of an unScotch Scotch vibe, but wonderfully made. Definite bourbon influences. A pretty brilliant, honeyed sipper. 😊

Poured a dram, deep gold in the glass. Nose is immediately big vanilla and honey, with a lovely juniper and ginger spice coming through. 🥃 Tastes wonderfully made, very rich and thick, almost syrupy. Sweet and spicy, with plenty of fresh oak, maple syrup, and a big coconut note. There's a kind of light, fresh melon liqueur thing in there too, and something that makes me think of pencil shavings and sawdust. Quite an achievement, really. It’s a very sexy whisky, definitely bourbon-influenced, long and quite interesting. Not very natural, maybe, but extremely liqueury and satisfying. 😉
