Ardnamurchan Distillery, inaugurated in mid-2014, stands as Scotland's westernmost distillery on the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula in Argyllshire. This rugged 50-mile stretch of land is accessible only via a carefully navigated single-track road, making the 90-minute journey from Fort William through the Ardnamurchan plateau of northern Mull a pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. The distillery represents the ambitious vision of Adelphi, a distinguished whisky merchant and independent bottler with roots tracing back to 1826 when Charles and David Gray established the original Adelphi distillery in Glasgow. After Archibald Walker's acquisition in 1857, the company expanded to become the only 19th-century enterprise controlling distilleries across Scotland, England, and Ireland, including Liverpool's Vauxhall and Ireland's Limerick distilleries, before its sale to D.C.L. in 1902. The Adelphi brand was masterfully revived in 1993 by Jamie Walker, Archibald's great-grandson, as an independent bottler, and transferred in 2004 to whisky aficionados Keith Falconer and Donald Houston, who partnered with former Diageo executive Alex Bruce. Recognizing that premium whisky stocks would become increasingly scarce, Adelphi initiated feasibility studies in 2007 for their own distillery, selecting their privately-owned Ardnamurchan land for its pristine water sources and isolation. After design work in 2012, ground broke in February 2013, construction commenced in June, and the distillery became operational in May 2014, with first casks filled in July—representing a total investment exceeding £7 million. The facility features a 2-tonne semi-lauter stainless steel mash tun, seven washbacks (four traditional oak—originally French cognac vats, with two later replaced by Oregon pine in 2018—and three stainless steel), with fermentation times ranging from 72-96 hours (extending to 112 hours on weekends). Distillation occurs through a 10,000-liter wash still and 6,000-liter spirit still, both equipped with external condensers and stainless steel recondensers. Ardnamurchan produces both peated (30-35ppm phenol) and unpeated styles, with a 2019 production target of 350,000 liters. While floor malting facilities are prepared, the distillery currently sources malt externally. The still room's panoramic glass windows offer views across the water to Tobermory village on Mull on clear days. Though legally restricted from releasing whisky until maturity, Ardnamurchan has offered AD-branded new make spirit since 2016, with the inaugural single malt anticipated for 2021 release.
