La Martiniquaise, having achieved tremendous success in the (primarily) French market with its blended Scotch whisky brands Label 5 and Sir Edward's, and following the excellent performance of its Glen Turner single malt whisky from the Glen Moray distillery acquired in 2008, decided to discreetly establish this large-scale grain whisky distillery in 2011, complete with blending and bottling facilities. This was the first greenfield grain distillery built in Scotland since 1964, designed by the American Colorado Group, which received the 'Design and Construction Excellence Award' from the Scottish Construction Centre in 2010.
