History

Ben Wyvis: Historically, there have been two Ben Wyvis distilleries. The first was built in 1879 in the suburbs of Dingwall. Some of the distillery buildings still exist and have been converted into apartments. In 1893, its name was changed to 'Ferintosh', and it closed in 1927, although its warehouses continued to be used until 1980. The second Ben Wyvis was located within the nearby Invergordon grain whisky distillery complex. This malt whisky distillery was established in 1965, had two stills, and a production capacity of 750,000 liters of pure alcohol. The distillery closed in 1977 and has since been demolished. Only a small quantity of Invergordon-version Ben Wyvis was bottled and sold, making existing stocks extremely rare.

Curiosities

Glenwyvis served as the template for Tamnavulin distillery, which was built by Invergordon in 1966 (see 'Glenwyvis'). Only two bottles (and one half-bottle) of the original Glenwyvis from the 1890s have ever appeared at auction.
