Yamazakura is a premium Japanese whisky brand produced by Sasanokawa Shuzo, one of Japan's oldest sake breweries established in 1765. The company began whisky production in 1946, ranking among Japan's pioneering whisky distillers. In late 2015, Sasanokawa Shuzo opened the Asaka Distillery in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, which remains the sole whisky distillery in Japan's Tohoku (northeastern) region. The name 'Yamazakura' elegantly combines 'yama' (mountain) and 'sakura' (cherry blossom), symbolizing Japanese heritage and nature. The Asaka Distillery employs traditional Scottish copper pot stills and leverages Fukushima's pristine water sources and continental climate to create whiskies with distinctive character.
